Pangani station lead with cases of police killings in 2022

Pangani police station continues to lead will the highest cases of police killings countrywide.

In a report launched by Missing voices on Friday,  11 cases were attributed to the station for the year 2022.

The report was launched in Yala dubbed the Accountability report which sheds light on Statistics and Trends of Extrajudicial Killings and Enforced Disappearances in Kenya for the Year 2022.

However, according to the report, the 11 cases reported at Pangani station was a significant drop from the 32 cases reported at the station in 2021.

"This could be explained by the transfer of 19 police officers from Pangani Police Station on November 25, 2021, following sustained campaigns by the Missing Voices coalition and other partners," reads the report further.

Kayole Police Station is second with 5 cases followed by Kahawa West and Nakuru West SubCounty police with 4 cases each.

The report was launched by Missing Voice, in partnership with Amnesty International, Defenders coalition, Code of Africa among other institutions.

It was further revealed that 2022 recorded 152 cases of police killings and enforced disappearances.

Despite the huge number, last year saw a 31.5 percent drop in police killings and enforced disappearances compared to 2021, where Missing Voices documented 219 cases. 

Police killings also dropped by 30.1 percent and disappearances by 38 percent.

"This is a positive trend,and we look forward to a Kenya without police violence," reads the report.

The report further reveals that January saw the highest police killings, with 28 cases from 11 incidents.
