City lawyer Cliff Ombeta has rubbished claims that former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i’s charges were dismissed following a series of meetings with leaders from the Kisii community.

Ombeta in a tweet on Tuesday said Matiangí is off the hook because no evidence was presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions to warrant his arraignment.

The lawyer said all the stories being peddled of how Matiang’i got off the hook are false.

He said individuals taking credit for DPP's move are simply chest-thumping for nothing.

“The only reason Matiangi was released by DPP, is because there was insufficient material to go by. Handled professionally. All those other theories of who went where or did what and chest thumping and limelight hogging were not issues before DPP. There was no horse-trading,” Ombeta said.

His reaction follows various reports on how leaders from the region lobbied to have the charges dropped.

The reports said an all-out push by politicians and professionals from Gusiiland and fear of regional rebellion against President William Ruto’s regime forced the state to abandon hounding former CS.

The DPP’s big no on charging Matiang’i came hours after Gusii's top leaders and professionals held a closed meeting where the agreement to save Matiangi is alleged to have been struck.

On Sunday evening, Matiang’i held a meeting with 11 elders and SDA pastors at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (Cemastea) in Karen.

Among those who attended the high-level meeting was Education CS Ezekiel Machogu.
