The Senate will hold its third sittings outside Nairobi in September.

The legislators have approved the sittings dubbed Senate Mashinani.

However, they are yet to pick the county that will host the sittings.

This will be the third Senate Mashinani.

The legislators held their first-ever plenary and committee sittings in Uasin Gishu county in September 2018.

The last sitting was held in Kitui in 2019.

The sittings were suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, they were not held because of general elections.

During the sittings, the lawmakers will hold their plenary and committee meetings in the assembly precincts of the county that hosts the lawmakers.

“The Senate resolves that its Plenary and Committee sittings be held in the counties for one week within September in every Session of the 4th Senate, except during an election year,” majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot said in a motion.

In the motion that was unanimously approved by the members, Cheruiyot said taking the house activities to ‘Mashinani’ will promote the role and work of the Senate.

It will also enhance public awareness regarding the Business of the Senate.

Cheruiyot held that the sittings will highlight existing and new opportunities for engagement in the legislative process.

The sittings, he said, will develop and strengthen partnerships at the county level of government.

“The Senate Mashinani will provide an opportunity to members and staff of county assemblies to learn and share best practices with Senators and parliamentary officers,” he said.
