A Parliamentary committee has threatened to order the arrest of Treasury CS Njunguna Ndung'u snubbing its invitation to explain claims the former regime spent in excess of Sh50 billion without Parliament approvals.

The Public Petitions committee said that CS has twice skipped its sittings to explain the claims.

Chairman Nimrod Mbai said the panel has issued a final invitation to the CS to appear on Thursday, failure which it will order his arrest.

"We would like to remind the CS that failure to honour the summons, the committee will have no option but to invoke the provisions of standing order 191," he said.

The provision provides that where a witness fails to honour summon, Parliament or its committee may order the arrest of the witness.

The committee is inquiring into the claims following a petition by Cofek CEO Stephen Mutoro alleging that the former regime spent in excess of Sh55 billion without seeking the approval of Parliament.

The CS was first invited to appear before the committee on February 28 but failed. He did not show up today, Tuesday.

"The committee does not have the luxury of time to be able to accord the National Treasury four weeks to respond to the matter," the chairman said.
