Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union secretary general Davji Atellah has faulted the government for failing to invest in healthcare.

Atellah said the situation in the country is because of the people put in charge of healthcare in the country.

He said these individuals don't use the health facilities in the country and wouldn't know the challenges faced.

"We are not investing in healthcare. We are not putting money to have functional public services. The people we have entrusted with healthcare do not seek healthcare in those facilities so they do not feel it," he said on Citizen TV.

Dr Atellah insisted that one of the ways healthcare challenges would be solved is by the country instituting a Health Service Commission.

He said the Commission will help solve manpower across all key departments under healthcare.

"If we had a well-accountable health service commission, this will ensure that the Kenyan doctors that are not employed, Kenyan nurses, clinical officers and technical persons are employed and are offering services."

His remarks come a few days after health worker's unions renewed their push for a formation of a Health Service Commission.

The unions said 10 years into devolution, there is a need to conduct an audit on the status of the health sector in the country.

"KMPDU believes that an honest audit of the status of the Kenyan Health Sector 10 years into devolution will conclude the need for a body akin to the Health Services Commission to harness the deployment of critical personnel and to get our synergy in the sector," KMPDU SG Dr Davji Attellah said.

He noted that conducting an audit will reveal a worrying mismatch where patients are increasing yet the counties are unable to attract and retain the crucial skills to render the specialised services these patients need.
