The driver is said to have rammed into a saloon car before hitting a 40 feet trailer leading to the flames.

Police said the deceased driver was being pursued by bodaboda riders in the town after he allegedly knocked down a pedestrian leading to the other two accidents with the last claiming his life.

The incident was reported to Machakos police station as a fatal road traffic accident.

Machakos sub-county police commander Moss Ndiwa confirmed the incidents.

"It occurred today, February 16, 2023, within Machakos town near Rubis petrol station along Machakos- Kyumbi road. It happened that the driver who is yet to be identified was driving a lorry from Kitui general direction and entered the town driving recklessly at high speed.

"On reaching Grogon area, he allegedly knocked down a pedestrian namely Dominic Musyoki Mutuku aged 35 years old who died on the spot," a police report seen by the Star read in part.

Police said the lorry's driver failed to stop after the incident prompting a group of bodaboda riders to give him a chase.

Ndiwa said the said motor vehicle upon reaching near Rubis petrol station within the town reportedly rammed into the rear of the motor vehicle.

"After which, the deceased lost control of his motor vehicle and collided with an oncoming trailer that was moving from Nairobi towards Machakos being driven by Simon Mwendo aged 45 years," Ndiwa said.

The police boss said due to the impact, both vehicles burst into flames.

"The unknown driver of the lorry was trapped in the cabin and burnt beyond recognition," Ndiwa said.

He said next to the scene, two stationary motorcycles near the scene were also burnt and one rider sustained burns on both legs while the other one sustained left leg injuries.

Both of them were rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital for treatment.

Police said the trailer's driver escaped uninjured.
