Over 1,000 members of the public including chiefs, Nyumba Kumi and village elders on Sunday joined police officers in celebrating end of 2022 year party.

The celebrations for Administration Police officers from Athi River subcounty were conducted at Athi River AP line in Machakos County.

Athi River subcounty Critical Infrastructure Police Unit commandant Mohamed Nur hosted the event attended by his Machakos county boss Dennis Odero and Athi River Subcounty Criminal Investigations Officer John Kanda.

Cops from other police units including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and their families also attended the celebrations as invited guests.

Nur said the celebrations were held for the officers and their family members to also enjoy since they missed out the December festivities celebrations due to the nature of their work.

"Police officers are very busy hence never had time to go celebrate the festive season with their families. This is why we organised this event so that our officers also have fun, celebrate, dine and wine with their loved ones for those who have families around alongside the public as they continue serving the nation," Nur said.

He said the event was also meant to promote relationships between police and the public to help suppress crime.

Those who attended the event ate, drank and danced after short speeches by some of the senior cops present, local leaders, residents and Athi River chief Cecilia Musyoki.

Odero took the opportunity to enlighten the public on what Administration Police Service is as a unit, its role and operations.

He said the unit was, however, working closely with other security agencies in the country to ensure law and order was maintained.

Kanda urged members of the public to volunteer intelligence information with security agencies for quick actions to help curb crime.

"So far, the relationship between us, police and the public is good. We, however, wish that it even becomes better. Kindly share with us intelligence information in good time to help us suppress crime, not only in Athi River but across the country,” Kanda said.

Chief Musyoki said both Nyumba Kumi and village elders in the area were committed in volunteering relevant information to relevant authorities for necessary action.

She said the Nyumba Kumi initiative was working in Athi River and had registered lots of successes despite some few challenges.

“We are doing well as a team together with the Nyumba Kumi Initiative. Lots of information is flowing from the public to the relevant authorities,” Musyoki said.

The administrator urged members of Nyumba Kumi initiative and village elders not to give up and instead continue working for the public good. She said all villages within her location were well covered by the initiative.

The meeting that started at 12 pm ended at around 4 pm to allow the officers resume their daily duties.

Nur was among the 16 senior cops feted by the former Machakos County police boss Issa Mohammud on January 13.

Mohammud said the sixteen officers had been resourceful, resilient, efficient, team players, motivating and reliable during the course of their duties in 2022.

He said they were awarded with appreciation letters, some token in cash and food for late Christmas to share with their loved ones, families, friends and relatives.

The officers were feted during the police end year party and thanksgiving ceremony at county police headquarters.

Nur was recognised for resilience, dedication and exemplary administrative skills and relations with colleagues alongside guiding junior officers and molding them to become better in the service.

He was also feted as the most outstanding CIPU commander in Machakos County.
