Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja will on Thursday mark his 38th birthday by planting 3,800 seedlings in the city.

The county boss will first plant a few seedlings at Central Park which has been closed for 15 months for renovations.

The exercise will take place in various wards within the county with the assistance of the National Youth Service.

His boss, President William Ruto, also planted trees on his birthday last year. His plan is to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

He planted 56 trees to mark his 56th birthday, as other counties held similar functions that saw a total of 560,000 trees planted.

Sakaja has been very categorical since he was sworn-in in August 2022, noting that there will be a proper tree-planting exercise that will be done by the county and the private sector.

This is in a bid to restore Nairobi's green status.

At least 11,000 youths in Nairobi will be employed to participate in the tree-planting programme.

President Ruto during last year's Jamhuri Day celebrations said his government will work closely with the Nairobi County government to ensure that the tree-planting exercise starts at the beginning of 2023.

Sakaja revealed that the tree-planting programme will create opportunities for young people.

He said that the program will compensate for the abolished Kazi Mtaani programme and keep the youth away from crime.

The program, with the help of the Kenya Forest Services (KFS) and the National Government, will have the young employees work for four days a week and earn Sh2,400 a week.
