Leaders from the Teso community have intensified their call on the government to create Teso county.

Speaking on Tuesday, Busia Senator Okiya Omtata said that the creation of Teso county should not cause differences in Busia.

"We support the idea of the creation of Teso county. All the leaders in Busia and the entire country shall unite so that the county can be created," he said.

Omtata however said that there are steps to be followed according to the constitution.

Teso South MP Mary Emase said that she supports the idea.

“We also have resolved to support the creation of Teso county and lobby all leaders from Teso, Busia and nationally,” Emase said.

The idea of creating Teso county has come under sharp criticism after leaders disagreed saying it will divide the county.

Speaking during an event last month, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma had opposed the creation of Teso county.

In 2020, Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama proposed the creation of five new counties to 52.

The legislator wanted counties in Kuria, Teso, Mount Elgon, East Pokot and Mwingi.
