Former Roots party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has told off the critics of outgoing IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.

According to Wamae, Chebukati served diligently and should be allowed to retire peacefully.

She went on to ask Chebukati's critics if they think things would have been better for him if he gave into the alleged demands of the 'deep state.'

"Some KEs are saying that Chebukati will never know peace. Q1: If he took instructions from the deep state to have '4' on the ballot paper, then surely on the victory, the reverse would have been true? Let the man retire in peace he served diligently," Wamae said on Tuesday.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission boss exits the agency on January 17 after serving a six-year non-renewable term.

Chebukati is exiting the electoral body alongside Commissioner Yakub Guliye and Molu Boya.

Some leaders and supporters of Opposition leader Raila Odinga have been calling for his arrest over what they have termed as the rigging of the August 9, 2022, general election in favour of President William Ruto.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has also called for his prosecution over the election.

"In my view, Mr Chebukati is a criminal who should be prosecuted and sentenced to jail," he said.

"What he has committed is a great crime against humanity and against the people of this country."

Odinga said that he strongly believes that Chebukati should be the one held solely responsible for what took place during the elections.

Shortly before Chebukati announced the presidential election results, IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera and four other Commissioners disowned the results.

Cherera and commissioners Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang'aya later resigned from office.

Irene Masit is being taken through a commission of inquiry established by President Ruto.
