Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said the capital will change regardless of noisemakers.

He said he will continue rolling out his planned changes in Nairobi and there is no turning back.

“I have heard talk that Nairobi was like this before I was born but I want to tell them that that’s why I am the governor. We must change our city and there is no shortcut about that,” he said on Thursday.

The governor was responding to those criticising his move to relocate matatus ( long distance Public Service Vehicles ) out of the Central Business District.

Sakaja also banned night clubs from residential areas in a move, which was applauded by President William Ruto.

However, his move to relocate matatus faced backlash and has put him at loggerheads with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to the DP, Sakaja ought to have consulted him before making decisions, which affect the businesses of Mt Kenya people- who gave him votes.

Hitting his critics, Sakaja said Nairobi is not competing locally but with international cities, which are far ahead in development.

“Nairobi is not competing with Kisumu or any other city, we are competing with other international cities and to achieve that we have to make some changes,” he said.

Last week, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga warned Sakaja of impeachment if he continues joking.

"We want to say Gachagua is not your equal. If you continue joking, we will impeach you," he said.

This was in connection with the disagreement statement between Sakaja and DP Gachagua on how to run the county specifically on the matatu issue.

Wamatinga warned that if Sakaja failed to show respect to Gachagua, the Kikuyus were going to deal with him.

"Gachagua made you governor. Don't play with the Kikuyu community. We will not relent," he said.
