Siaya Governor James Orengo has said that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is mandated to speak to the President directly and not the Deputy President.

Orengo said that should there be any problem in Nairobi, Sakaja should talk to President William Ruto and not DP Rigathi Gachagua.

"Sakaja can only talk to Ruto not his assistant. The constitution establishes two levels of government which are distinct and states that we conduct affairs with respect and mutual corporation," he said.

He spoke during the memorial service of Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah's father in Indangalasia, Kakamega on Tuesday.

Orengo said that the DP should not force Sakaja to do what he wants.

The Siaya Governor added that his Nairobi counterpart is right and Gachagua is wrong.

This comes after a disagreement between the DP and Sakaja on how to run the county transport system.

On December 20, 2022, Gachagua warned Sakaja against implementing his plan to relocate matatus from the CBD to GreenPark Terminus.

He termed the move as ill-intentioned which he claimed was aimed at persecuting the business community from Mt Kenya, adding that it will disrupt businesses.

"I shall sit down with Sakaja because we are the ones who elected him. We must first discuss anything which can disrupt business in Nairobi. We do not need a lot of speed, go slow," the DP said.

Sakaja had initiated plans to relocate long-distance matatus from the CBD to the newly built Green Park bus terminus on Haile Selassie Avenue.

Long-distance matatu operators, however, opposed the move and went to upon which the court temporarily stopped the relocation.
