Utawala MCA takes oath after winning by-election

Patrick Karani won the seat for a second term after garnering 1,109 votes.

Patrick Karani was on Friday sworn-in as Nairobi Utawala MCA.

The ward rep took the oath at the Nairobi County Assembly during a special sitting.

The sitting was presided over by Deputy Speaker Paul Kados. The second term MCA won the December 8, 2022 by-election on the Jubilee Party ticket.

Karani won the seat after garnering 1,109 votes against his closest rival Samson Ngure who got 847 votes.

Karani had been endorsed by Azimio One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga who even campaigned in the ward for him.

Karani said he was honoured to be elected for a second term to serve the Utawala residents.

“I will strive to deliver services for the people of Utawala ward as they are my employer,” he said.

With Karani in office, Azimio remains the majority at the county assembly with the highest number of MCAS at 68 while Kenya Kwanza has 53 MCAs. There are three Independent MCAs.

In terms of party strength; UDA has 35 MCAs, ODM has 35, Jubilee (7), Wiper (4), CCK has one and three are Independent MCAs.

President William Ruto-led UDA party and Raila Odinga's ODM each have 17 nominated MCAs.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee has three nominated MCAs and Wiper has two.

In total, ODM and UDA have 52 MCAs each, Jubilee has 9 Wiper has 6 and CCK has one MCA.
