Nandi Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei has said the new chairperson of the National Health Insurance Fund Michael Kamau was a victim of a political witch hunt and political conmanship.

He said under the last regime, criminal justice was weaponised to pursue political agendas.

"Eng. Kamau the new Chairperson of NHIF was a victim of political witch hunt/political conmanship like most Kenyans where criminal justice was weaponised to pursue political agendas under Uhuru's government," he tweeted.

"Most of these politically motivated cases shall crumble like a pack of cards."

Cherargei was talking in reference to corruption allegations that faced Kamau in 2018.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta suspended Kamau from his ministerial position in 2015 and was charged in court with abuse of office.

Kamau was accused that while serving in the Ministry of Roads as PS, he and with ministerial tender committee re-designed the Kamukuywa-Kapsokwony-Sirisia road inappropriately, leading to a loss of Sh33 million.

Kamau was among the seven top management appointments by President William Ruto to key State Corporations.

He was named the chairperson of the National Health Insurance Fund, for a period of three years, with effect from the 23rd of December 2022.

In a gazette notice, the Head of State revoked the appointment of Lewis Nguyai to the position.

Kamau is a career public officer who joined the civil service as an entry-level civil servant and rose to Cabinet Secretary.

He joined the public service as an assistant engineer in 1981 and rose through the ranks to Permanent Secretary, before being appointed Transport and Infrastructure CS by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013.
