Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has apologised to Kenyatta University vice-chancellor Paul Wainaina over public humiliation.

Speaking on Friday during the KU 52 Graduation Ceremony, the DP said that Wainaina is a family man and did not deserve humiliation.

"Professor Wainaina and the senate, on behalf of the government of the Republic of Kenya and the political leadership, we want to apologise to you and the family and the KU fraternity for the humiliation you were accorded for standing firm to refusing the land of KU to be grabbed," he said.

The DP said that the government will procedurally give land to squatters and the remaining land will be for KU.

In July, former President Uhuru Kenyatta bitterly and publicly castigated him for refusing to cede nearly half of university land for a World Health Organization project and to resettle squatters.

Photos of a weeping VC Wainaina surfaced throughout the nation as he bid his students goodbye.

“This is probably the last time I am talking to you as VC. I understand a new council is being formed,” Wainaina said amid tears while addressing staff.

Uhuru vowed to deal with Prof Wainaina and the university council “swiftly and effectively”.

Former Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua had sent the VC three consecutive letters demanding that he surrenders university title deeds to the government.

Prof Wainaina, however, got a reprieve after the High Court reinstated him.
