On the radar: Senators at KNH to probe baby Travis death

Key activities and events lined up for today.

In Summary

• Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja's 10-member cabinet nominees will be appearing before the County assembly for vetting on Tuesday morning.

• The nominees will face the county assembly Appointment committee with the first to appear at 8:00 am.

Senators will on Tuesday visit Kenyatta National Hospital as the inquest into the death of baby Travis Maina continues.

The Senate Health Committee chaired by Uasin Gishu senator Jackson Mandago is expected to meet with the hospital’s CEO Evanson Kamuri to deliberate on the circumstances that led to the death of Travis.

The committee has been conducting investigations to dig into circumstances under which the two-year-old died after a fork jembe got stuck in his skull in early October.

The committee has already summoned the management of Kiambu county and that of the Thika Level 5 hospital as it seeks to unravel the circumstances under which the child was attended to.

Vetting of Sakaja's cabinet

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja's 10-member cabinet nominees will be appearing before the County assembly for vetting on Tuesday morning.

The nominees will face the county assembly Appointment committee with the first to appear at 8:00 am.

Majority Leader Peter Imwatok told the Star that the committee will be fair in the vetting process and follow the right procedures.

The vetting process had been stopped for over a month after the Association of Muslim Lawyers and the Nubian Rights Forum moved to court halting the vetting on grounds that the Governor’s list of CEC nominees was discriminating against them as minorities.

Court to rule on Tob Cohen murder case

The High court will on Tuesday make a ruling on whether it will allow the withdrawal of Tob Cohen murder case.

Last week, the Director of Public Prosecutions defended his decision to drop murder charges against Tob Cohen’s widow Sarah Wairimu.

The late Cohen's family has opposed the application to have the case withdrawn.

Sarah Wairimu Cohen was charged three years ago and the case has never proceeded.

The body of Cohen, a former CEO of Philips Electronics East Africa, was found dumped in a septic tank at his home in September 2019.

The case will be mentioned before Justice Daniel Ogembo.

NCIC to launch post-election analysis report

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission will on Tuesday launch a post-election report in Nairobi.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to grace the event.

Candidates make final push for crucial Senate seat

On Tuesday, Georgia's seven million registered voters will go to the polls for the fifth time in four years.

That's thanks to a quirk in the state's election law that requires winning candidates for state-wide posts in general elections not just to get more votes than everyone else, but to get fifty per cent of the votes cast.

Twice in the past four years, candidates from both parties have fallen short of that mark. Hence the need for a run-off election in 2021 for both Georgia's US Senate seats and another one this time around.

Meta threatens to remove US news content

Meta has threatened to remove news content from Facebook in the US.

It objects to a new law that would give news organisations greater power to negotiate fees for the content shared on Facebook.

A similar law, passed in Australia, led to news on Facebook being briefly suspended last year.

Meta claims their platform, in fact, provides increased traffic to struggling news outlets.

It says publishers put their content on Facebook because "it benefits their bottom line."
