Operations on entertainment joints operating within residential areas might soon be extended to other counties.

This is after the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse hinted that it will begin to engage all counties to ensure that similar operations are conducted across the country.

Nacada has referred to the ruling by High Court Judge Justice Chacha Mwita on November 2018 that termed it illegal for bars to operate near schools and residential areas.

“He grounded his ruling on Article 42 of the constitution which gives everyone the right to a clean and healthy environment which should be free from pollutants such as noise,” Nacada chief executive officer Victor Okioma said.

“The authority is calling on resident associations and other community groups to do their part in calling out and reporting to authorities any proprietor violating the law to ensure such transgressions are promptly halted.”

The CEO said children must be protected from exposure to alcohol and drugs during the festive season, saying they need a conducive environment as they undertake home-based learning activities in readiness for the re-opening of schools in January 2023.

Nairobi county government on Friday last week cancelled licenses for nightclubs that were operating in residential areas and said it will not be issuing the permits to such premises anymore.

Acting county secretary Jairus Musumba said the affected entertainment joints can continue operating as bars and restaurants but keep the music volume at a minimum.
