Police in Samburu have recovered one illegal firearm and two rounds of ammunition in an operation.
The National Police Service said in a statement Wednesday that the illicit G3 rifle was recovered on Tuesday and loaded with a magazine.
It said officers from Sereolipi Police Station made the recovery in Leangata area following an operation to mop up illicit firearms in the area.
"The successful recovery was as a result of joint efforts between NPS, NGAO, Northern Rangeland Trust rangers and community-based policing committee members," NPS said.
The Service appreciated the support it is receiving from members of the public as teams of officers in various parts of the country work round the clock to deter crime.
The recovery of the gun comes amid renewed efforts by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to end cattle rustling and banditry in the Rift Valley region.
The CS has for the past few days been touring hotspot areas holding security meetings.
On Wednesday, Kindiki hosted elected leaders from Baringo county for discussions around ending cattle rustling and banditry in the region.
Earlier in the day, the CS toured Laikipia county where he said at least 360 National Police Reservists (NPR) will be recruited and trained for deployment in the county.
While speaking in Ol-Moran, Kindiki urged police to use maximum force if necessary to evict herders who have invaded private farms and who ignore the government's ultimatum to leave immediately.
