The government has announced an immediate mop up of illegal firearms in Igembe North, Meru county to combat insecurity in the area.

The directive by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki follows an upsurge of insecurity incidents in the area including cattle rustling and banditry.

Speaking at Kinisa GSU camp during an impromptu visit on Tuesday, Kindiki said as a measure to combat the cattle rustling menace, 174 National Police Reservists (NPRs) will be immediately recruited and trained to serve Igembe North.

"This will increase the number of NPRs in Tigania and Igembe regions to 200," the CS said.

Kindiki said the NPRs will supplement other specialised security units deployed on the ground including GSU, Rapid Response Unit (RDU) and Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU).

He said the officers will maintain security and restore sanity in the area as the government seeks permanent solution to end cattle rustling.

Kindiki further warned migratory herders against invading farms to graze their livestock.

The warning came hours after he issued a directive to camel herders to vacate private farms in Mwingi county.

He ordered police to use force, including deployment of firearms, should the armed herders defy the vacate order.

"We cannot wait for another death or crisis before we act, neither will we have a discussion with criminals. Use all the available means to protect the lives and property of peace-loving Kenyans. The government will defend you," Kindiki said.
