- The road is one of former president Uhuru Kenyatta's pet projects realised during the sunset years of his term.
- Expressway was initially projected to cost Sh65.2 billion but was later increased to Sh72.8 billion
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei wants answers from the government on why a Chinese contractor who did the Expressway cannot be compelled to renovate the Mombasa Road.
In his petition to the Senate, Cherargei has wondered why the government budgeted Sh9 billion for the repairs on the road.
He says, "China Road and Bridge Corporation is responsible for the damages on the said road and ought to take full responsibility for the repairs".
In a statement which has been directed to the relevant committee, the senator further wants the state to explain why there was inflation on the cost of Expressway.
The project is one of former president Uhuru Kenyatta's pet projects realised during the sunset years of his term.
"The committee should state why the construction of Nairobi Expressway that was initially projected to be Sh65.2 billion was later increased to Sh72.8 billion as stated by KenHA," he stated.
The authority, he said, did not factor in the cost of rehabilitation and upgrading of the road despite a hike in the cost.
The 27-kilometre toll road runs from Mlolongo passing through JKIA and Nairobi’s CBD to the James Gichuru junction to Waiyaki Way.
He is further petitioning the government to provide a clear timeline for the commencement and completion of the intended renovation and rehabilitation of the damaged sections of the road.
Cherargei is also seeking answers on the guidelines in place on the usage of the Expressway.
The emergency service privilege, he noted, must be made clear in order to avoid abuse.
