Nyeri Diocese Archbishop Anthony Muheria has chided Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria's remarks on GMO.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Muheria said it was wrong of Kuria to joke about such serious and sensitive issues.

"It was disgraceful and disrespectful to Kenyans to joke about life and death," he said.

"Even if it is an issue which could be taken as a joke, it would be wrong to bring about statements that will triggerless death, suffering and insecurity."

Muheria said the CS needs to apologise to Kenyans especially now the country is experiencing drought in some areas.

"We feel irrespective of the matter in consideration, we would request honestly that Kenyans deserve respect and not spite and in this matter, they deserve an apology," he said.

He said the issue around GMOs needs serious sitting and discussions to avoid divided opinions.

"GMO is a serious matter that deserves discussion, deep sober engaged minds, it's not a one-hand decision to embrace the idea completely without any reservation," Muheria said.

Kuria had said there is nothing wrong with adding GMO foods to the menu as Kenyans live in a country where they compete with death daily.

"Being in this country you are a candidate for death and because many things are competing for death in this country, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list," Kuria said.
