Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula on Thursday promised to improve the relationship between Parliament and political parties.

Speaking when he hosted a delegation from the Political Party’s Liaison Committee (PPLC), Wetang’ula committed to facilitate access of parties to committees of the House.

The delegation led by the chairman of Progressive Party of Kenya (PPOK) Evans Misati sought to establish a sound working relationship between Parliament and PPLC.

While congratulating the Speaker on his election to preside over the National Assembly, the delegation called upon his support on legislations that seek to streamline election processes in Kenya.

“Speaker, we congratulate you on your election to the top seat of the House and looking forward to working with you on various legislative matters geared towards strengthening our democracy," Misati said.

The Speaker welcomed the delegation and assured them of his support towards achieving their mission.

Wetang'ula pledged to work with PPLC, registrar of political parties and ensure that they are included in the process of restructuring the commission.

“I am aware that two IEBC commissioners are retiring and the process of hiring should be in the offing," he said.

"I will endeavour to ensure that you are facilitated to participate in this important activity as we think through the electoral process of country."

The Political Parties Act, 2011 Sec (38) establishes Political Parties Liaison Committee at the National and County Level.

The principal function of the Political Parties Liaison Committee is to provide a platform for dialogue between the Registrar, Electoral Commission and political parties.

Present in the meeting included Christopher Kilonzo (Umoja na Maendeleo Party), DEP chairperson, Taabu O.W. Daniels.

Others were NARC Kenya secretary general Gerry  Owiti, Alternative Leadership Party of Kenya, Treasurer, Cinderella Nekesa and Entrust Pioneer Party deputy treasurer Andrew Njoroge.
