A German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in partnership with World Bicycle Relief (WBR) have donated bicycles to Vihiga Young Agripreneurs Network (VIYAN).

The bicycles will help the youth group in transporting their produce to and from the market as a way of improving agri-business in the county.

World Bicycle Relief program manager Peter Wechuli said that the 120 bicycles donated are eco-friendly and will be an immense contributor to global carbon emission reduction.

The bicycles are worth Sh2.6 million.

He said the bicycles are expected to improve mobility needs within households by increasing access to essential basic facilities like hospitals and schools in Vihiga.

“It is anticipated that these bicycles will ease access to markets and reduce the high transportation burden within the supply chain,” Weschuli said.

“The program is in four counties already and they include Kakamega, Siaya, Kisumu, Busia, and now Vihiga.

Already in Kisumu and Siaya and partly Busia learners have been the greatest beneficiaries of the project.

In Vihiga, students, farmers, and CHVs will benefit from the same.

Chief Officer in charge of Agriculture Dominic Luvavo applauded the donors for the generous donations saying that they will greatly improve extension services at the grassroots level.

He also said that the Agri-business Strategy for Youth that was launched will help in agricultural youth programs in the county.

“With such a program in place we are going to attain our goals of food security not just in the county but in the country and globally as well,” Luvavo said.
