Parliament invites public views on Ruto PSs

The vetting of the 51 PSs unveiled on Wednesday will start on November 14

Kenyans have an opportunity to submit any objections they might have to suitability of President William Ruto's Principal Secretaries nominees.

The National Assembly has invited Kenyans to present their written submissions ahead of the vetting exercise

The vetting of the 51 PSs unveiled by Ruto on Wednesday is planned to be held between November 14 - 18, before respective departmental committees.

 

Public Service Commission had forwarded to the President a shortlist of 250 candidates that had passed the interviews.

Parliament has been racing against time to constitute the departmental committees which are mandated to conduct approval hearings for PSs.

MPs embarked on the election of committee chairpersons and their deputies from Tuesday this week a process that will be concluded next.

Some four committee elections were postponed.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Thursday relayed to the House the President’s communication officially submitting the names for processing by the House.

The Speaker then directed the Clerk to notify the nominees and Kenyans at large on the date and venue where the process will be conducted.

On Friday, National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge invited written affidavits from Kenyans on the nominees.

The public has up to Friday next week to submit their affidavits to the Clerk.

The affidavits, Njoroge stated, must be accompanied by supporting evidence on the suitability or otherwise of the nominee.

“The National Assembly hereby notifies the general public that its Departmental Committees will conduct approval hearings(vetting) for nominees for appointment to the position of Principal Secretary from Monday, 14th November 2022 to Friday 18th, November 2022 at venues within Parliament buildings starting from 9.am,” Njoroge said.

He added: “The Departmental Committees of the National Assembly further invites the public to submit any representation by written statement on oath (affidavit) with supporting evidence on the suitability or otherwise of persons nominated to the position of Principal Secretary.”

Among the notable names on the list are former Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir, former Regional Development PS, Belio Kipsang, and former Nairobi county deputy governor, Jonathan Mueke.

The Health Committee chaired by Endebes MP Robert Pukose will vet nominee Peter Tum(Medical Services) and Josephine Mburu of Health Standards and Professional Management.

The Committee in National Administration chaired by Narok  South MP Gabriel Tongoyo will approve Interior PS nominee Raymond Omollo.

The committee will also vet PSs Julius Bitok(Citizen services) and Caroline Nyawira of Correctional Services.

Defence and Intelligence Committee chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech will process PS nominee Patrick Mariro.
