An intensive training programme for senators is underway in the Coastal City of Mombasa.

The 67 senators will be taken through the parliamentary procedures.

They will also be sharpened on legislative business and oversight as they settle down.

The event started on Wednesday morning with all the senators led by Deputy Speaker Kathure Murungi, majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot, his minority counterpart Steward Madzayo in attendance.

Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye is leading the secretariat in the retreat also attended by the senate staff and trainers.

"This is our time to look at these books and we are supposed to operate on the House," said nominated senator and former Deputy Speaker Margaret Kamar.

Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye said that the training is meant to equip the legislators with necessary knowledge and skills to effectively discharge their constitutional mandate.

" You will be taken through legislative matters including standing orders, law making process, motions, statements and petitions, " the clerk said.

The senators will also be taken through the roles and duties of the committees as well as management of county offices.

The lawmakers will also learn inter-parliamentary skills, parliamentary protocol and etiquette.
