Senators will be touring the Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital on a fact-finding mission amid reports of negligence on the part of the facility.

This follows the death of Maureen Anyango at the facility after giving birth to twins.

Robert Omondi, the husband to Maureen, appeared before the Senate Health Committee to give an account of what transpired to his late wife.

The committee, led by Uasin Gishu senator Jackson Mandago is now considering all possible options on the table, including temporary closure of what they have termed as a ‘slaughter house’.

Senators say the death could have been avoided had the people taking charge acted with speed and professionalism.

“Mama Lucy cannot fail and the senate committee on health claim to succeed on anything. Crack the whip, do what must be done. There are a lot of Nairobians who go there for medical care but if it means you have to shut that hospital for a period of time and give the management the issues that you want addressed before it can be reopened it is within the powers of the committee,” Senator Enoch Wambua said.

The 28-year-old woman who delivered twins at the facility on September 6 and her family have alleged that she passed on after excessive bleeding.

The deceased's husband told the committee that his wife started bleeding profusely after delivering the bouncing babies through caesarean section.

“Just hearing and recounting the story that Robert has told us there are so many things that do not make sense. I would not even hire a personal driver who does not know his whereabouts in Nairobi. How do you give an ambulance to someone who does not know where they are going?” Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna paused.

Mandago has pledged to ensure justice is served to the family that lost their loved one, and invite the management of both the county government and the hospital to respond to the arising questions.
