Preparations towards Madaraka Day celebrations are almost complete, Interior PS Raymond Omollo has said.

The Madaraka Day celebrations will take place at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County.

The PS spoke on Thursday when he visited the stadium to assess the level of preparations ahead of the event.

"Today we have had an assessment of virtually all the locations where the activities will be happening as part of the celebrations. We started at Matulo airstrip where work is over 90 per cent complete and will be ready by May 15," Omollo said.

"We proceeded to Kibabii University where we will have exhibitions as part of the run-up towards the celebrations,” the PS said.

Omollo in February had confirmed that the Matulo airstrip in Webuye, would be completed ahead of Madaraka Day on June 1.

The stadium will host the main celebrations, which will be preceded by an exhibition at the Kibabii University under the theme "Food and Security".

The PS added that the County Commissioner’s residence will host the State Luncheon after the celebrations.

"Our last point of call was the County Commissioner’s residence which will be the garden where His Excellency the President will host the luncheon. That is ready, the contractor will hand over the site on Monday and we are confident that all other preparations for the celebrations will be completed in time."

PS Omollo said that National Youth Service personnel are aiding in the completion of the stadium's terraces and infrastructure, including road repairs and utility services on schedule.

The teams at KERRA, and KURA are also on track to deliver the feeder roads within and outside Bungoma town, he said.

Omollo said Kenya Power and Lighting Company and the State Department for Water have the necessary electricity and water connections.

He was accompanied by the Principal Secretaries in charge of performance and Delivery Management, Veronica Nduva and Devolution Teresia Mbaika and the Western Region Commissioner Irungu Macharia.

Others were Senior State officials from the National Celebrations Steering Committee, Kibabii University Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Ipara Odeo and Bungoma County officials.
