DAP-K leader Wamunyinyi joins race for Bungoma senate seat

DAP-K party leader Wafula Wamunyinyi has joined the race to vie for the Bungoma senate seat.

In a statement on Saturday, the DAP-K party said the leader will be vying for the seat in December by-elections.

"It's now official our Party leader Wafula Wamunyinyi will be vying for the Bungoma County Senatorial seat in the December by-elections. Wamunyinyi is banking on his rich experience as a legislator, liberation champion and defender of farmers to win the seat," the statement read.

Wetangula quit the seat to vie for the National Assembly speaker's seat which he won.

Wamunyinyi unsuccessfully defended his Kanduyi parliamentary seat in the August 9, elections.

He lost to Ford Kenya's John Makali.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati in a gazette notice said the elections will be on December 8.

"Following declaration of vacancy that occurred in the office of Member of the Senate for Bungoma County confirmed by the respective Speakers of the Senate vide a letter dated the the26th September 2022, there shall be a by-election for Member of the Senate for Bungoma County on Thursday, December 8, 2022," he said.

The seat has so far attracted more than 15 aspirants, including Wetang'ula's aide Wafula Wakoli, businessman Joseph Lendrix Waswa and Jacob Machacha, Rev Herman Kasili, lawyer Erick Nakhurenya and former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga, among others.
