Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi now says President William Ruto should take time and understand why his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta introduced subsidies on maize flour and fuel.

He went on to say that Ruto should also study why it was necessary for the former president to use the Kazi Mtaani initiative to cushion poor households.

Ngunyi noted that if he does not, the people will become President Ruto's enemies, and not Uhuru or the elite.

"Dear Ruto: Take time to study why Uhuru introduced subsidies on Unga and fuel. And why he used Kaazi Mtaani to protect the poor... Uhuru and the elite are not your enemies," he tweeted on Tuesday.

His remarks came shortly after the president announced that Kazi Mtaani initiative had been abolished.

Ngunyi was the technical assistant to former President Uhuru.

Ruto said the youth will instead be employed under Kenya Kwanza’s affordable housing programme.

The President said more than 2,500 youths will benefit from the low-cost housing project being rolled out across the country, compared to 500 under the old-fashioned project.

“Kazi Mtaani is now outdated. Collecting garbage is not going to be the case anymore. Houses will now be our business and the youths are going to get jobs,” he said.

Ruto spoke on Tuesday when he presided over the ground-breaking of the Soweto B affordable housing programme in Kibra.

Kazi Mtaani was started about two years ago by retired president Uhuru Kenyatta following the ravaging effects of Covid-19 that saw many Kenyan lose their livelihoods.
