A businessman is counting losses after more than 100 chicken he has been rearing were killed in a fire incident in Mathare slums, Nairobi.

More than 10 structures were burnt in the Monday night incident that left many homeless.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The fire also burnt water tanks and sacks of cereals the businessman had kept in his house.

Some locals picked up the burnt chicken and said they would eat them.

Police said Tuesday an investigation had been opened to establish how the fire was started.

In Ruaraka area, several structures were also burnt in a fire incident. No injuries were reported.

There has been an increase in fire incidents in the city's informal settlements stretching service providers.
