Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has remained coy over his preferred successor amid growing speculation that he is grooming his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba is the heir apparent.

Muhoozi lend credence to the speculation when he on Friday kicked off a fresh storm in Uganda by claiming he is the country's next President-designate.

But speaking on KTN on Sunday night, Museveni neither denied or confirmed the speculations saying it's not in his place to know who will rule Uganda after him.

He said the decision lies squarely with the people of Uganda although his successor must be one chosen by the ruling National Resistance Movement party.

"I'm a member of the National Resistance Movement, you must have heard of that. So, I go with what the National Resistance Movement decides. I don't decide on behalf of, I decide with the NRM," he said.

He said that for one to be a leader of the country, he must posses the qualities and abide by the principles of the NRM.

"We have got our four principles; Patriotism, a Pan-Africanist, a democrat and one who is interested in leading socio-economic transformation in the country," he said.

Uganda will go to the polls in 2026 to elect a new President with a possible change of power from Museveni who has ruled the country since 1978.

He recently elevated Muhoozi to a full General of the Uganda People's Army, days after the son almost sparked off a diplomatic tiff with Kenya by threatening military invasion of the country and the capture of Nairobi.

Museveni defended his decision saying Muhoozi may have made a mistake but he is a good soldier and army commander.

In his tweet on Friday, Muhoozi expressed confidence that the opposition under musician-cum politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, will never lead the country upon his father's retirement.

"To the Ugandan opposition, after my father, I will defeat you badly in any election. Ugandans love me more than they'll ever love you," he said.

Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform, first declared his presidential bid in 2019 but lost to Museveni in the 2021 elections.

This is not the first time that Muhoozi has made comments over the presidential succession.
