A hospital has surrendered land that had been grabbed and sold to its proprietors in Kabarnet, Baringo.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the owners of the Kerio Hospital wrote to the Commission after investigations revealed that the land had been illegally acquired.

The land, which measures approximately 0.1805ha belonged to the Department of Housing and Urban Settlement in Kabarnet town before it was grabbed and sold. It is valued at Sh5 million.

"This is a rare occurrence where persons who have knowingly or unknowingly acquired public property decide to voluntarily surrender the same back to the State for public benefit," EACC said in a statement on Saturday.

Investigations by the anti-graft body revealed that ownership of the land was irregularly changed on December 23, 2004, to an individual who then sold it to the Hospital for Sh4.2 million in 2017.

The hospital's proprietors on Thursday surrendered the Title Deed at the Nakuru EACC Offices.

"The Title Deed was received in Nakuru on behalf of EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak, by the EACC South Rift Regional Manager, Mr Ignatius Wekesa. EACC has commenced the process of reverting the land back to the Government," EACC said.

The commission also said that land officials who facilitated the land grabbing will be subjected to criminal prosecution.

EACC called on other individuals in possession of the stolen public property to also voluntarily surrender.
