Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reiterated that it took God's hand for him to be the country's second in command.

Speaking on Saturday, the DP said he was a man destined for jail courtesy of people who were persecuting him for associating with then DP William Ruto.

"You know I was to go to jail, that's what they had planned but God overturned," Gachagua said.

He was addressing mourners during the funeral service of the late Baringo Deputy Governor Charles Kipngok at Solian Girls High School, Eldama Ravine.

"Wale bindamu walinipangia kwenda Kamiti, Mungu akanipangia niende Karen," Gachagua said in reference to his official residence in the upmarket suburb.

"Human beings planned to send me to Kamiti (prison), God planned to send me to Karen)

Gachagua said had he not been brave, he would have given in to intimidation and abandoned Ruto to avoid the persecution.

Prior to his election to the second most powerful office on land, the former Mathira MP was battling a Sh200 million court case and several of his accounts stood frozen.

The State claimed in court papers Gachagua acquired the funds through irregular contracts awarded to companies associated with him, but he denied the allegations saying the court never gave him a chance to justify  the source of the funds.

The DP told the congregation to never associate with cowardly leaders saying they will never take them anywhere.

"Kiongozi yeyote ambaye ni muoga, musitake hata kuwa karibu na yeye. Hata akikupatia mkono umusalimie usikubali kuchukua," Gachagua said.

(Don't associate with any cowardly leader. When he even gives you a handshake, don't take it)

"Kama sisi hatungekuwa watu hatuogopi, tulitishwa tumwache William Ruto, tukafanyiwa madhara, tukasimama kidede. Tumefika," Gachagua said.

(We were intimidated to abandon William Ruto but we were brave, we stood firm and here we are)

The DP said Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and her Nakuru counterpart Susan Kihika were equally brave even after being intimidated.

"When men hid under the table, these ones stood firm like men. Thank you because the war that was there did not want cowards," he said.
