ODM leader Raila Odinga has said it was unconstitutional for President William Ruto to revoke Kenya's recognition of the Sahrawi Democratic as an independent state.

In a statement posted on the ODM Party's Twitter handle, Raila said the decision should have been approved by the cabinet first.

"Raila Odinga has described the decision by President William Ruto to sever relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as unconstitutional since it was done without the approval of the cabinet," the tweet read.

"He says such unilateral decisions are hurting the image of Kenya."

On Wednesday, Ruto took to Twitter to announce the revocation.

The tweet was however deleted a few hours later.

"Kenya rescinds its recognition of the SADR and initiates steps to wind down the entity’s presence in the country," Ruto said.

He cancelled the recognition after a meeting with an envoy from Morocco, who had been sent to convey a congratulatory message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The SADR was colonized by the Spanish colony, and it claims the territory of Western Sahara.

Morocco has asserted claims over the region, alongside Mauritius.

Ruto also said Kenya supports the United Nations framework as the exclusive mechanism to find a lasting solution to the dispute over Western Sahara.

President Ghali of SADR was among the VVIPs who attended Ruto's inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, September 13.
