President-elect William Ruto has asked Kenyans to pray for President Uhuru Kenyatta for the country to have a peaceful and smooth transition.

While stating that Monday's Supreme Court verdict on the presidential petition is in God's hand, Ruto said the outgoing President needs to be put in prayers for God's wisdom as he prepares to hand over power.

"Sisi ni watu ambao tunamtambua Mungu na hata maneno ya kesho tumewachia Mungu na tumewachia viongozi wetu wa huko mahakamani," Rutyo said.

(We are people who recognise God and even tomorrow's issues we have left in his hands and the court)

"Mimi nataka pia niwaombe kwa heshima kubwa muombee rais wetu mheshimia Uhuru Kenyatta katika nafasi hii ya transition kwa sababu ndio atasimamia mambo hii ya transition, Mungu amsaidie."

(I want to also ask you respectively to pray for our president Uhuru Kenyatta during this transition period because he is the one who will handle the whole process)

The President-elect spoke on Sunday at a prayer service in Njoro, Nakuru county.

He said it's also incumbent upon the country to ensure that Uhuru retires respectively as has been the case with his predecessors.

"And that is how it shall be with our president Uhuru Kenyatta as he will be retiring. He will be respected, he will have his position as a leader who helped our country."

Ruto and Uhuru, former political soulmates, have had strained relations since the March 8, 2018 handshake that bred new friendship between the head of state and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Their relationship deteriorated in the run-up to the August 9 general election when Uhuru backed Raila as his preferred successor under the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Ruto, however, won the hotly contested polls with over 7.1 million votes but Raila, who garnered 6.9 million votes, contested the outcome at the Supreme Court.

The court will on Monday render its verdict on the petition which could either see a nullification of Ruto's win, a call for a recount of votes or uphold Ruto's win.
