Voting starts smoothly in Kitui Rural amid low turnout

Isolated cases of alleged voter bribery were reported in some polling centres.

Polling is most of the polling stations in Kitui Rural constituency started on time on Monday amid isolated cases of alleged voter bribery.

About 55,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots across 157 polling stations to determine who will be their next Member of Parliament.

Incumbent MP David Mboni Mwalika of the Wiper Democratic Party is defending his seat against  Charles Nyamai of United Democratic Alliance.

Nyamai cast his vote at Kanyangi primary school polling station a few minutes past 8am while Mwalika was expected to cast his vote at Mbitini Primary school polling station at 10am.

As voting got underway, a brief fracas was witnessed at Kanyangi Primary School when the Presiding Officer, John Kavele, threw out a woman who claimed to be a Wiper candidate but was accused of bribing voters.

Police officers manning the polling station escorted the protesting woman and detained her outside for interrogation.

In an earlier press briefing, Kitui Rural Returning Officer, Winfred Ndoti, said that no hitches were expected during the election as all voting materials had reached polling centres.

Ndoti said candidates in the election visited the constituency tallying centre on Sunday at South Eastern Kenya University and confirmed there was no mixed up in the ballot papers as it happened on August 9.

In the mix up that occasioned the postponement of the August 9 polls, ballot papers for Pokot South constituency were delivered in Kitui Rural while those for Kitui Rural were sent to Pokot South.
