US ambassador celebrates women elected in August polls

Whitman said that the move is a step towards achieving gender equality.

The US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has celebrated Kenyan women who clinched political seats in the just concluded August polls.

In a statement on Friday, Whitman said that the move is a step towards achieving gender equality.

"As we mark Women's Equality Day commemorating a woman’s right to vote (19th Amendment) in the US, I congratulate the record of elected women - 26MPs, three Senators, and the seven Governors inaugurated yesterday (Thursday). What a fantastic step towards gender equality," she said.

The seven women elected leaders were among the 45 governors who took an oath of office on Thursday.

The August election saw women who were elected for the first time and others set to serve their second term.

Seven women were elected governors which is an increase from 2017 polls that saw three women clinch the seats.

The seven women governors include Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru, Nakuru governor Susan Kihika, Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza, Fatuma Achani of Kwale and Cecily Mbarire governor Embu County.

Others included Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos and Gladys Wanga of Homabay County.

In 2017, three women were elected senators. They were Margaret Kamar for Uasin Gishu, Susan Kihika for Nakuru and Fatuma Dullo for Isiolo.

Three women have been elected senators in 2022.

The women are Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo), Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), and Tabitha Karanja (Nakuru).
