Azimio's Martha Karua has said President-elect William Ruto is breaking the law by accepting defectors to his party.

In a video seen by Star, Karua said it was unfortunate for anybody who aspires to lead this country and for somebody who is a deputy president for the outgoing government to break the laws of the country.

"Our political parties act under which coalitions are built stipulates very clearly that for anybody leaving a coalition, there is a process."

"So for the DP to start wooing people and enticing them to leave a coalition without the requisite legal provision is either a display of impunity or gross ignorance of the law of the land, I think knowing him, his true colours are showing lack of respect for the rule of law and deficit of democracy in his actions," Karua said.

Karua quoted the constitution saying the winner of a presidential race is never sworn in until either the time for filing a petition is over or no petition is filed.

"If a petition is filed and determined fast, those who may remember, Uhuru was not sworn in until the petition in 2013 and even in 2017 was determined," she added.

Karua said Ruto is trying to disorganise how political parties work and the rules they set.

"It's premature for someone to start to disorganize political parties illegally and unlawfully and I would urge Kenyans and members concerned to be warned and the deputy president of an outgoing government to acquit himself with the laws of the land."

Ruto has been receiving leaders who are decamping to his led Kenya Kwanza for the past few days which has been a loss to the Azimio coalition.
