MCA wins Machakos MP seat, trouncing UDA's Munyaka

A one-term MCA has sent Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka home after he clinched the parliamentary seat. 

Caleb Mule was elected Kimakimwe Ward MCA in Machakos County in 2017.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate early this year threw his gloves in the Machakos parliamentary contest.

Mule garnered 47, 596 votes ending Munyaka’s 15-year-political career as the Machakos town MP.

Munyaka, who was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket in 2017, managed 20, 000 votes. He ran on UDA party.

The results were announced by Machakos town constituency returning officer Agnes Kindi at Machakos University, the constituency's tallying centre early Thursday.

The seat attracted six candidates including Mumbuni Ward MCA Paul Museku, the Wiper candidate, who came third with 2, 533 votes.

A total of 70, 796 votes were cast in the Machakos town constituency, that’s 60.32 per cent of the total registered votes in the constituency.

Machakos Constituency, according to the IEBC, has 117, 367 registered voters with 232 polling stations.

However, Matungulu MP Stephen Mule and his Kangundo counterpart Fabian Muli both retained their seats.

Mule, who defended his seat on Wiper ticket, garnered 17, 703 votes against his closest contender Philip Munyao’s 13, 878. Munyao contested as an independent candidate.

Others in the race were Joseph Muling’a (NARC) who got 6, 819 votes and Peter Mwanzia, who managed a paltry 3, 474 votes. Mwanzia ran on UDA ticket.

Muli retained his seat as Kangundo MP, having garnered 15, 520 votes. He contested on a GDDP party ticket, flooring Wiper’s and former area MP Kyengo Maweu, who managed 10, 455 votes.

Mule defeated Maweu for the same seat in 2017, suspending the latter’s political carrier.

“I am highly delightful this morning with devout thanksgiving for my constituents, family, friends, the old and the new.”

“For me, every hour is grace. May God bless you all," Matungulu MP elect Stephen Mule said after he was declared the winner.

Tallying in Mavoko, Mwala, Kathiani, Yatta and Masinga constituencies is still going on in respective tallying centres.
