Some Kwale and Lamu residents are yet to cast their votes as the polling stations in different regions were yet to open by 8 am.

Confusion was experienced at the Kaderbhouy Health Centre polling centre as voters didn't know their polling stations.

At 8 am, the voters were still haggling with the IEBC clerks and security officers at the centre.

Voters were expected to find out their stations from a list pinned on a wall outside. The voters said IEBC's decision to have all polling stations in one building complicated things.

A number of older people who could not read relied on the literate to help them, as the clerks struggled to control crowds inside the stuffed room.

At 8 am, rains disrupted the shambolic queues outside, even as the people on the queue complained of IEBC's negligence of their welfare.

"They should have brought us tents to shelter from the rains but they didn't. We came at 5 am but little has been done. And then they will say Mombasa residents are lazy," said Mama Aisha.

Another voter who only identified herself as Nyagah said she would only vote for appealing candidates, and reject the incumbent who didn't deliver in the last five years.

"I have favourites who are in a party that I don't like so I won't vote for them. That's why I'll vote for those who I'll see to be appealing," Nyagah said.

Voters are requesting the IEBC to add them more time since the delay has cost them their time.

Voters came in as early as 5;30 am and are bracing the chilly weather in long queues in readiness for the exercise.

Lamu is one of the counties with the largest numbers of registered voters at 69,774 and 167 polling stations in the coastal region.
