Kisii’s UDA senatorial candidate Joash Maangi on Monday claimed police stormed his Ogembo residence at dawn on suspicion that he was stuffing marked ballot papers.

The outgoing Kisii Deputy Governor said the act was to intimidate the UDA candidates in the region ahead of polls.

When contacted for a comment, area Police Sub-County Police commander Christine Amaya termed the reports by Maangi as fiction.

"There is no officer from my station who has raided his residence. What you are telling me is pure fiction,” she told the Star by phone.

According to Maangi, however, the officers raided his home at dawn and interrogated his workers on allegations of ballot stuffing.

He said they entered the kraal and the chicken house and found nothing before they retreated.

Maangi was not at the home during the raid.

In separate press conferences in Ogembo and downtown Kisii, the deputy governor accused the police of being used to intimidate UDA candidates in the region.

He accused Interior CS Fred Matiangi of ordering the raid .

He also said he has reported the incident to officers at Ogembo to undertake investigations.

"I am a law-abiding citizen and never known for such acts before and in the foreseeable future,” said Maangi during the media briefing.

In his town residence, Maangi was joined by UDA governorship candidate Ezekiel Machogu who condemned the incident.

"We are on the cusp of a momentous poll Tuesday and it reeks of malice for security agents to be used to do illegal raids on people’s homes."

"I personally condemn this and ask our officers to be professional as they execute their mandate,” he added.

The two were flanked by his running mate Migosi Ogamba and Woman Rep candidate Teresa Bitutu.

In Masaba South, police are hunting two suspects associated with hooliganism.

The duo is suspected of ambushing and injuring Kanu candidate Hillary Nyaanga's driver - Zablon Mabira - and three other supporters on Monday dawn.

The driver was escorting Eng Nyaanga's relatives at 3am in the morning and was returning when he was ambushed outside Masimba Police Station and clobbered with a blunt object.

Area Sub-County Police chief Samuel Gitau said already they have begun the manhunt for the suspects.

"The complaint has been filed with us and a probe is underway to ascertain the motive of the attack," he told the Star in his office.

Gitau said they want to know the motive of the suspects.

"We have forwarded the case to DCI to unearth any other suspects linked to this incident," he said.

Separately, Jubilee governor candidate Chris Obure claimed the government has removed his security without any advance notice.

The officers were recalled on Monday morning. He however said the withdrawal did not move an inch saying God will provide him with the security he needs.

"I have not been given any reason so far, I was only told they had been told to report back to their stations. I want to tell my supporters to stay calm because I still believe God will grant me the security I need,” he said.
