The ruling Jubilee party now claims that Kenya Kwanza running mate aspirant Rigathi Gachagua showed Kenyans that he is after power to settle scores.

In a statement on Wednesday, the party said that Gachagua's mission in the deputy presidential debate held on July 19 was to attack the Azimio running mate candidate Martha Karua.

"The opponent made it clear that they only want power to settle scores against the President and to free up proceeds of corruption so that he can finish his mansion and host keshas," Jubilee said.

During the debate, however, Gachagua said that if they form the government, no one will come after President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The party added that the Kenya Kwanza deputy presidential aspirant won on who holds the biggest grudges in the country, while the Azimio deputy won the hearts of Kenyans.

"On who cares about Kenyans, who has a grasp of issues affecting mwananchi, you (Karua) won."

The President Uhuru Kenyatta-led party commended Karua on how she handled herself throughout the 90-minute debate, not falling to the tricks employed by Gachagua.

"Well done Mama Martha Karua! In a debate where the opponent's agenda was to provoke you and attack individuals, you remained calm, composed and articulate.

"You made it clear that the Azimio/OKA coalition is about social justice, social protection of the vulnerable, economic recovery and the well-being of Kenyans," Jubilee added.

Karua faced off with Kenya Kwanza deputy presidential candidate Rigathi Gachagua in the second part of the presidential debate on Tuesday night.

Both Ruto and Raila have, however, praised their deputies for stellar performances in the debate.

Ruto expressed confidence in Gachagua, stating that he has what it takes to push for the victory of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance in the August 9 General Election.

"Congratulations Rigathi Gachagua my very able running mate. Kenyans are confident that in you we have a seasoned, passionate and focused leader to help us steer Kenya Kwanza to victory and the nation to prosperity. We thank almighty God na ubarikiwe sana. Never mind the media," he said.

On Martha Karua, Raila said, "Your poise, mastery of subject matters, and staying calm even when provoked were impressive. I congratulate my able deputy and team member Martha Karua. The Azimio family stands proud of your performance during last night's debate. Keep selling."
