A police officer has gone into hiding after allegedly raping a female suspect who was being held at Kaimosi police station, Nandi County.

Samuel Wanyonyi, 31, was the duty officer manning the report desk at the police station when he allegedly committed the offence.

Nandi central OCPD Doris Chemos said the officer armed with a rifle entered the women's cell and picked the woman who was among four suspects being held.

“She asked the suspect who was in her jeans pair of trousers to accompany him as the officer in charge of the station wanted to have a talk with her,” the OCPD said.

Unaware of what was ahead, the suspect-turned-victim followed the armed officer and frisked her into another empty room within the police station where she ordered her to remove her clothes at gunpoint.

He then raped the woman in the statement-taking room after which he escorted her into the cells threatening to kill her should she ever reveal the rape incident.

“This morning, during a routine inspection, OCS was confronted by the woman and informed him of what the officer on the night duty had done to her,” Chemos said.

It was after the report that police swung into action taking the woman to the hospital for examination.

A P3 form was issued and filled by a doctor and the victim at the Kapsabet county referral hospital.

On realizing that the matter had been reported, the officer who was preparing his breakfast at the police quarters dashed into a nearby maize field and disappeared.

It also emerged that Wanyonyi was a P1 trained teacher and was recruited to the national police service after failing to secure employment with the teachers’ service commission.

The OCPD added that the officer who is married with two children was on the run and had switched off his mobile phone.

The victim had been placed in custody for stealing an infant and was set to appear in a Kapsabet court today (Monday) for the plea taking.

She has since been transferred to Kapsabet police divisional headquarters for further investigation and to appear in court as DCI officers track the rapist.
