Police officers attend security training ahead of polls

NPS vowed to perform its duties well to ensure the country holds free, fair and peaceful elections.

Security agencies within Nakuru County on Tuesday attended a sensitization and training program on election preparedness courtesy of Nakuru County Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri.

The training was aimed at equipping the officers with knowledge on various issues, including security preparedness during the electioneering period.

They were also taught about handling election offences, tackling Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in relation to elections, dealing with civil unrest and fostering Community Policing, among others.

"We will continuously provide a safe and secure environment throughout the electioneering period," NPS said.

The participants were drawn from the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service and National Youth Service.

The program was facilitated by Dominic Kisavi, CP who is the Head of Elections Security Secretariat, and Charles Otieno, a Consultant at National Police Service Headquarters.

In May, the NPS vowed to perform its duties well to ensure the country holds free, fair and peaceful elections.

Deputy Inspector General of police Edward Mbugua said NPS will investigate and apprehend those who will cause a breach of peace and insecurity during the campaigning and electioneering period.

A team of six police officers had completed training on how to handle matters of sexual gender-based violence cases in the country.

The officers successfully completed a Forensic/ Sex Crimes Investigations Course.
