One student has died while four others sustained serious injuries following two separate road accidents in Matungulu, Machakos County.

Matungulu sub-county police commander Monica Kimani said the first accident occurred at Nguluni area along Nairobi - Kangundo Road, while the other at Masokani area along Koma - Kenol Road on Thursday.

Both the incidences were reported to the KBC police station.

"In the first incident, it occurred today at around 1050 hours at Nguluni area along Nairobi- Kangundo road. It happened that one Daniel Ragira (42) was driving a motor vehicle registration number KBU 765 U, make Toyota Fielder from Nairobi general direction and on reaching the location of the accident, he tried to overtake," Kimani said.

"On realising there was an oncoming vehicle, swerved back to his lane whereby he lost control of the said vehicle and hit two male juvenile pedestrians who were walking along the road."

Kimani spoke to the Star on phone on Thursday.

She said as a result of the impact, Emmanuel Wambua, 15, died on the spot while Enock Wambua, 13, fractured his left leg.

Both the deceased and injured persons were students at Countryside Educational Centre and were heading home for a midterm break when the incident occurred.

Addressing reporters at the scene, Ragira said he was avoiding an overtaking car when he swerved off the road leading to the accident.

Ragira said his car had a tire burst.

"I was driving from Nairobi to Tala Girls High School to pick up a student. On reaching the scene, there was a vehicle overtaking dangerously. I did not want to collide with the oncoming vehicle. So I got off the road but one of the tires burst and I lost control," Kagira said.

Kimani said the second accident was self-involved.

"It happened that one Bonface Maingi, 38, was driving motor vehicle registration number KCE 061 V make Toyota Wish from Kenol general direction towards Koma general direction," Kimani said.

"On reaching the location of accident, he hit a pothole and consequently lost control of the said vehicle which veered off the road and landed in a ditch."

"As a result of the impact, the driver sustained bruises while the three passengers, all students of Muindi Mbingu secondary school sustained serious injuries."

Muindi Mbingu secondary school principal Daniel Muli confirmed that students from the school were involved in the accident.

"I was driving ahead of them when I heard a loud thud. On stopping, I noted the vehicle behind carrying students had crashed," Muli said.

He said the students were heading homes after the school closed for a midterm holiday.

Kimani said the body was moved to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary where it was preserved awaiting a post-mortem and disposal.

The victims were also rushed to the same facility where they were admitted and undergoing treatment.

The police boss said both wreckages were towed to the KBC police station awaiting inspection.

Police have launched investigations into the accidents.
