National Assembly Minority leader John Mbadi has hit out at Deputy President William Ruto over his remarks on the cost of living saying he is being insincere to Kenyans.

"Ruto should be honest with the people of Kenya and should not play populous politics," he said.

Speaking on Wednesday during the National Assembly proceedings, Mbadi said  Ruto as the Deputy President of Kenya must strive not to mislead Kenyans.

His remarks come after the DP on Sunday said that the budget estimates read by National Treasury and Planning  CS Ukur Yatani, if passed, would push up the cost of living beyond reach for many citizens.

The UDA leader urged the Members of the National Assembly to support him by shooting down the proposed Budget Bill.

“That budget wants to push up the costs of water, bread, maize flour and motorbikes. I want to assure our competitors that that budget won’t be passed by MPs," he said.

Ruto added that if the Budget is passed, he will change it within three months of his leadership if he wins the August 9, General Elections.

The Suba South MP said that the number of essential commodities with a proposed increase of VATs is few.

"In fact apart from Unga, I'll say there is nothing. The DP is aware that the Nation Assembly would not accept Unga to be removed from zero-rating to exemption," he added.

Further, Mbadi said that he previously opposed Ruto's suggestion to have the government impose a 16 per cent VAT on all basic commodities so that the State can raise more money for debt management.
