Man hacks ex-wife to death in Machakos

A woman has succumbed to injuries after she was hacked by her ex–husband in Kathiani, Machakos County in a bizarre case of crime of passion.

Ndaisi Wavinya, 25, died after she was attacked by Daniel Mainge, 31, at her new matrimonial home in Kalunga village, Kathiani subcounty on Wednesday, April 6.

Machakos criminal investigations officer Simon Waithaka said the woman died at Kathiani Level 4 Hospital on Thursday, April 7 while undergoing treatment.

She had lived with her new husband for only two weeks before her death.

According to police sources, the man trailed the woman to her new husband’s home before he hacked her using a machete.

The suspect traveled from his Ngumuti village in Kivaani location, Kangundo subcounty to Kathiani to commit the crime.

Police rescued him from being lynched by angry members of the public after he attempted to flee the scene.

“Both the deceased and suspect hail from Kangundo subcounty. They were married before they separated and the woman remarried to another man,” a police source privy to the incident told the Star.

“The man must have had a spy who informed him about his ex–wife’s whereabouts," he said.

According to eyewitnesses, the man attacked the woman at around 12:00 pm Wednesday after she had just returned home from the garden accompanied by her new husband.

"The current husband wasn't aware that the suspect was in his home, it was an unannounced visit," an eye witness told the Star on Friday.

A police officer told the Star that the suspect grabbed a machete from the deceased and used it to hack the woman causing severe injuries on her body.

"The suspect had a knife which he intended to use for killing the deceased. The current husband ran after the suspect after he hacked the woman and raised alarm before the public intervened by attempting to lynch him," the officer said.

The suspect was rushed to the same hospital where he was treated. He is being held at a police station in Machakos County pending arraignment.
