Azimio la Umoja movement will win the August polls by a landslide, UDP leader Cyrus Jirongo has said.

He said the coalition has the best teams on the ground that should deliver a convincing victory for Azimio.

“We have a candidate and the best teams countrywide. What we just need is to do things the right way and we’re home and dry with a convincing margin,” Jirongo said.

Azimio has already endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga as its flagbearer.

The former Lugari MP said the election will be largely peaceful.

He said the margin with which Azimio plans to win the presidential race is so big that there will be no doubt.

“Trouble that can lead to violence can only be triggered if the contest is tight. That’s when people begin making noise that can incite their supporters,” he added.

Jirongo said Kenyans are suffering and what they need is leadership that can be trusted.

Jirongo is angling to join the race to succeed Governor Wycliffe Oparanya in Kakamega under the Azimio umbrella.

Kakamega ODM chairman Geoffrey Mitalo said there is need for parties within Azimio to consider zoning to avoid unhealthy internal competition that may deny the coalition seats.

ODM has been urged to field candidates in counties like Kakamega and Vihiga where the party is dominant, while other Azimio affiliates field in areas such as Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties.

“We appreciate their support for our presidential candidate but I beg them to consider other smaller seats so that we don’t suffer the same fate we suffered under the defunct Nasa coalition,” Mitalo said.

ODM leadership has lamented that the party lost seats it deserved to win under the Nasa arrangement because of rivalry within the coalition.

Mitalo said internal competition could easily create room for rivals, particularly from Kenya Kwanza to win seats.
