The National Police has defended its cops following the murder of the two suspected robbers along the Thika Super Highway.

The service said, Pangani police officers responded swiftly to the robbery with violence incident and managed to corner two suspects who were fleeing on a motorbike after a chase along Thika Super Highway.

This comes following uproar from Kenyans on social media who claimed that the suspects were shot at a close range by the police even after surrendering.

In the statement, the police said that the suspects, who had robbed a woman at gunpoint, in the Pangani area defied orders to surrender and instead, fired at police officers who promptly engaged them in self-defence.

“As a result, the two suspects were fatally injured,” NPS said.

According to the police, they retrieved one black revolver with six rounds of ammunition.

They also recovered one brown knife and four smartphones.

The case remains under active investigation.

The cases of motorbikes being used to execute robbery incidences within the country have been on the rise.

This was revealed during the crackdown of criminals hiding behind the boda boda sector after the Forest Road incident where a woman was assaulted by boda boda riders.

Following the incident, President gave an order that all the boda boda operators across the country should be registered afresh in order to wipe out criminals.
