Ruto cleared to vie as UDA presidential candidate

Ruto's endorsement will mark his decamping from the Jubilee party.

All system go as Deputy President William Ruto gets cleared to vie as United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party presidential candidate as two other candidates got disqualified.

This was after he presented his credentials before UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for verification on Saturday morning.

Tracy Wanjiru, 23, was disqualified for lacking a degree certificate as she is currently a third-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Accepting the outcome, she expressed confidence in DP Ruto’s ability, noting that hope is not lost and she will try again in the future.

Orina Nyakwama who had applied for waiver of nomination fees lost his bid with party’s NEC citing the need for an equal playing field.

Nomination fees for persons seeking the party's presidential ticket had attracted the highest amount at Sh1 million for male candidates while female and youthful candidates will part with Ksh500,000.

Following his clearance, about 5,000 delegates allied to UDA are expected to attend a political jamboree at Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday to endorse Ruto's presidential bid.

This will be in accordance with Article 6 of the UDA constitution which clarifies the minimum number of delegates expected at such an event.

Ruto's endorsement will mark his decamping from the Jubilee party.

Ruto's affiliate partners, Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetang'ula will be on the list of chief guests.

Other UDA nomination fees for aspirants angling for the gubernatorial positions under UDA stands at Sh500,000 for male candidates and Sh250,000 for the youth and female candidates.

Male senatorial aspirants will part with Sh250,000 while their female counterparts will part with half the amount, same with youthful candidates.

Women Representatives will part with Sh250,000 while youthful politicians seeking the same position will have to part with half the amount to get UDA's nomination ticket.

Aspirants seeking the position of members of the National Assembly (MPs) are required to part with Sh250,000 for male candidates, Sh125,000 for female aspirants and the youth.

For aspirants seeking UDA's ticket to run for the Member of County Assembly (MCA) position, male politicians will pay Sh50,000 while the youth and female candidates remit half the amount.
